The ultra super-critical coal based power plant, with the capacity to generate 1320MW of electricity, is scheduled to be built in Kalapara upazila, Patuakhali, at an estimated cost of $2bn, Dhaka Tribune reports.
NWPGCL is required to implement 3,490MW under a government plan, which covers construction of a series of coal-fired power projects for generation of 20,000MW of electricity by 2030.
NWPGCL managing director A M Khurshedul Alam was quoted by the news agency as saying that the company is entering into joint venture agreements in order to meet the prevailing demand of electricity.
"To achieve the target, the company has taken a plan to install 2,640MW ultra supercritical coal based power plant in joint venture," Alam added.
The agreement represents the second MoU after the Bangladesh-India Friendship Power Company which will set up a 1320MW coal-fired power plant at Rampal.
NWPGCL has to date set up two power plants, namely 150MW Sirajganj power plant and the 150MW Khulna power plant.
