The unit was shut down at 12:01am on April 19, 2014 for carrying out the scheduled maintenance activities.
During the outage, one-third of the reactor’s 157 fuel assemblies will be replaced and various safety inspections will be performed.
FENOC will inspect the unit’s reactor vessel head, turbine and electrical generator.
Additionally, the company will initiate preventative maintenance expected to support continued safe and reliable operations will be performed on major components including pumps, valves and the cooling tower.
The company will also undertake various projects in preparation for replacement of the unit’s three steam generators and reactor head in 2017.
These activities include installation of a heavy-duty crane system in containment and measurements to support planning for the future replacement.
Around 1,000 temporary contractors along with FENOC and FirstEnergy employees will supplement the Beaver Valley workforce during the outage.
Since the completion of last refueling in November 2012, the 904MW Beaver Valley Unit 2 has generated over 11.7 million MWh of electricity.
