Google will invest $100m while SunPower will contribute $150m under a new program, which will support residential solar lease projects.

The combined $250m program is expected to finance solar power systems through SunPower solar leases for home and building owners.

Google corporate finance head Kojo Ako-Asare said the company is committed to promoting the efficient use of resources and expanding the use of renewable energy.

"Our partnership with SunPower makes good business sense and supports our goals for a clean energy future," Ako-Asare said.

The deal with SunPower represents Google’s sixteenth renewable energy investment and its third residential rooftop solar investment.

Google has invested over $1bn in renewable energy projects on three continents and across a range of technologies.

Together, the projects can generate over 2GW, or enough electricity to power about 500,000 US homes a year.
