The move forms part of the company’s efforts to begin mining at the site in August.
The company is planning to hire more staff after it achieves initial production rate of six million tons per year. At full capacity, the mine would have a workforce of 450.
Maules Creek mine is said to be one of a few remaining Tier 1 undeveloped coal assets, and one of the largest coal deposits in the country.
Whitehaven Coal general manager for Maules Creek Peter Wilkinson said: "One of the primary goals of the recruitment process is to have a local workforce at the Maules Creek operation, wherever that is possible."
"This first phase of recruitment demonstrates our commitment to the local area and shows the economic and employment benefits that Maules Creek is bringing to the community," Wilkinson said.
The company said that the construction of the mine is on track with first coal scheduled to be railed in March 2015.
