The R2-0 and R2 research reactors, with a capacity of 1MW and 50MW respectively, were decommissioned in 2005 following completion of approximately 45 years of service.
Under this contract, Areva will prepare a detailed project schedule and disassemble the two reactors.
The radiation level of the components will be measured prior to packaging them in the appropriate storage casks and return to the customer.
Work under the contract is scheduled to commence in the first half of 2015.
Areva reactor dismantling head Stephan Krueger said Areva is a leading player to support utilities in their dismantling and decommissioning operations.
"The contract from SVAFO strengthens AREVA’s position in the reactor dismantling market. Over the coming years, many nuclear plants will reach the end of operation," Krueger added.
Currently, Areva is preparing dismantling programs for nuclear plants in German that decommissioned in 2011 following the country’s decision to withdraw from nuclear power.
