According to the company, the well is located some 210km southeast of Santos, off the coast of Sao Paulo, where water depth is 214m. Drilling the well is part of the exploratory activities for the assessment plan of well 1-BSS-68, which had determined the presence of gas in sandy reservoirs in the post-salt section.

The discovery was confirmed via tests carried out in reservoirs located as of a depth of 3,970m.

The consortium will give continuity to the exploratory activities by means of formation tests to be carried out in the gas intervals that have already been discovered, said the company.

Earlier Petrobras said that its oil and natural gas production was 5.4% higher in Brazil in 2008. The company said that exclusive oil production averaged 1,854,655 barrels, a 3.5% increase over a year ago, while natural gas production topped-out at 51 million cubic meters per day, 17.8% above last year’s average.

Adding the volume produced in the fields located in the nine countries where Petrobras has production activities, the company’s total daily average rose to 2,399,958 barrels of oil and natural gas in barrels of oil equivalent (boe), up 4.3% compared to the 2007 average.
