According to Reuters’ data, shares in Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) soared by as much as 4% to hit a record high, finishing the day on an increase of 1.5%. In addition, British Gas parent Centrica’s shares also reportedly rose by 1.6%, while International Power increased by 1.5%.

The Telegraph has reported E.ON chief executive Wulf Bernotat as saying that the utility will not discount the UK as an area for potential acquisitions, although he commented that E.ON is most likely to concentrate on expansion on the continent. The publication also reported that, of all the possible UK targets, SSE is emerging as the most likely candidate.

Reuters cited Mr Bernotat as saying that, as a result of E.ON’s withdrawal from the race to run Ednesa, the company will have more scope for growth in other markets. Mr Bernotat is reported to have said that these markets could also include Russian or Turkey.
