According to the BBC, once refined, cooking oil would be used in the plant to produce 35MW of renewable energy, enough to power 60,000 homes. The plant will also reportedly produce around 200,000 tonnes of biodiesel a year, which will be used predominantly in local refineries.
The BBC cited Robert Behan, chief executive of Agri-Energy, as saying: It effectively involves the conversion of environmentally sustainable feed stocks such as tallow and used cooking oil, along with virgin oil crops such as rapeseed, into biodiesel and power.
The BBC reported Mr Behan responding to local community fears about odor and traffic by saying that the plant’s operations will be strictly governed by the UK’s Environment Agency and Health and Safety Executive. Mr Behan reportedly added that no scent would result from the processes and that the company would work closely with local authorities to mitigate the impact of increased traffic flow.
