The Ramones II South is a part of the Ramones natural gas pipeline system, which is considered as one of the largest energy infrastructure projects in Mexico extending from the Texas border to central Mexico.
The Ramones II South pipeline, established as a joint venture between Pemex and GDF SUEZ, will span 291km from San Luis Potosi to Apaseo El Alto, Guanajuato.
Capable of delivering 1.4 billion cubic feet per day of natural gas, the Ramones II South pipeline represents a total estimated investment cost of $1bn.
GDF SUEZ chairman and CEO Gerard Mestrallet said: "We are delighted to begin construction of the Ramones II South pipeline, which will be key to the expansion of the natural gas transportation system in Mexico."
ICA Fluor is responsible for the construction of the 42-inch diameter pipeline.
The project will be operated and maintained by GDF SUEZ upon completion of construction, which is expected by the end of 2015.
The project would generate 1,480 construction jobs and 3,000 indirect jobs.
The Ramones natural gas pipeline, with a total length exceeding 1,000km, will be an important project for the development and energy security of Mexico.
Mexico can import up to 2.1 billion cubic feet per day of natural gas from the US with the project.
