Under the INR32500m (€40m) contract, awarded by Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL), Alstom will build two ±800 kV, 3000 MW converter terminal stations.
Alstom T&D India MD Rathin Basu said: "We have been actively associated with Power Grid in establishing back-to-back HVDC systems in the past to improve power flow and grid connectivity between the five electrical regions of India.
"The Champa-Phase II HVDC project follows the earlier success of Champa-Phase I, and confirms Alstom’s market and technological leadership in the HVDC domain."
The new ±800kV, 3000MW transmission link, which will run in parallel with the first UHVDC transmission link, will mark the completion of the 1,365km long energy highway between Champa in central India and Kurukshetra in northern India.
With the new contract, the total transmission capacity of the advanced UHVDC system increases to 6000MW.
Alstom will also design, manufacture and deliver on a turnkey basis ±800kV UHVDC thyristor valves, 32 converter transformers, 400kV gas-insulated switchgear, substation equipment, and communication and supervisory control and data acquisition systems (SCADA), as part of the contract.
The project also includes commissioning and operation of both the terminal stations as well as their integration with Champa – Kurukshetra Line 1 bipole (from Phase I), which is under construction.
Alstom will manufacture all equipment at its facilities in India, UK, France and Italy.
