Owned by Eco Sustainable Solutions, the plant will be expanded with a further 1.1MW of food waste processing capacity.

Commissioned in 2012, the Eco-Dorset AD plant was built by Weltec and the extension is scheduled to be completed in autumn 2014.

Upon extension, approximately 37,000tpa of food waste will be used by the plant to generate an electrical output of 1.6MW, which will be fed to an adjacent feed mill.

The power is fed to the national grid when the mill is not operational.

Local farmers will use the digestate produced by the plant, which is in the process of gaining PAS 110 accreditation.

The AD’s processed 1 ton of organic waste could be converted into 600 to 800 kWh of energy, which is enough to power five refrigerators for one year.
