Australian integrated energy company Origin Energy has announced that its Quarantine power station can assist with the increased demands on South Australia’s electricity supply caused by extreme temperatures.
Andrew Stock, executive general manager of major development projects for Origin Energy, said: The power station has now synchronized with the grid, run at full output and if required, is able to safely deliver the full load of 120MW into the state power grid.
The additional power output may assist households during the coming days as hot weather conditions are expected to recur which may put strain on the state’s power supplies. We will monitor the situation and dispatch the extra capacity into the market if needed.
Mike Rann, the premier of South Australia, has welcomed Origin’s announcement and said the project had invested almost A$90 million in the state.
Mr Rann said: This project delivered more than 130 jobs during construction and it is obviously a very important investment for the state. Importantly, the 120MW additional supply will more than double capacity to 216MW of peaking power, enough to supply the equivalent of approximately 130,000 homes in South Australia during peak demand.
