The plant, which is considered as the largest gas-to-grid AD plant in the UK and the second plant for the ReFood brand in the UK, has been designed to recycle some 90,000t of commercial and domestic food waste to generate up to 17NWhs of biogas.
The biogas will be transported directly to the national gas grid to provide enough power for 8,000 homes.
ReFood operations director Paul Morris said: " Our first gas-to-grid AD plant is now operational as a showcase for both the ReFood brand and also the AD industry as a whole both in the UK and Europe."
Britcon project construction director John Whitmore said: "Through our work with ReFood we have developed an intense process of value engineering which ensures best value throughout all elements and stages of the project."
The Widnes plant gas-to-grid AD plant provides integrated food waste collection and recycling services for businesses.
