The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) started strike after talks between the company and NUM ended in deadlock.
NUM said that it is embarking on a strike as the company is paying its members at Koornfontein mine one week of service per year, while the members at other operations are being paid three weeks per year of service.
NUM Highveld regional secretary Stanley Lebelo said: "This company is very arrogant because even when we were dealing with picketing rules we could not reach an agreement because they wanted to impose their own picketing rules.
"The CCMA ended up imposing at least reasonable picketing rules to parties.
"We are also intending to apply for a secondary strike from other Glencore operations."
