The $3m project serves a Pennant Midstream natural gas processing facility in Springfield Township in Mahoning County by replacing temporary equipment installed earlier and enables future expansion.
Ohio Edison regional president Randall Frame said: "With the natural gas industry bringing new employment and business development opportunities to Ohio, FirstEnergy and Ohio Edison are expected to keep pace by continuing to upgrade our system to meet this growing demand for safe and reliable electric service."
The midstream processing facility separates natural gas into dry and liquid components using large amounts of electricity.
The project, which comprises installation of 81 new wooden poles and one steel pole in approximately 3.5 miles of new right-of-way to a substation located at the Pennant Midstream facility, connects to an existing 138kV transmission line in Mahoning County.
A temporary 69 kV transmission line and mobile substation were installed by Ohio Edison earlier in 2014 to handle the electricity needs for Pennant Midstream’s construction and start-up activities.
American Transmission Systems, a FirstEnergy transmission affiliate, will own and operate the new transmission line.
FirstEnergy intends to invest approximately $730m on service reliability infrastructure enhancements and transmission projects in the Ohio Edison area in 2014.
