The 350,000 sq ft facility, to be located in the Rivergate Industrial Park, will initially produce large power transformers.
Construction of the facility is scheduled to begin this year, with first production expected in 2013.
According to the company, the plant will create up to 275 new jobs and will be designed and constructed by O’Neal, a South Carolina-based integrated design and construction firm.
Tennessee governor Bill Haslam said that Memphis is the right place for this project given Tennessee’s more than half century of innovation in the field of energy technology and its longstanding economic and cultural ties to Japan.
