The projects will be considered as part of the EU’s New Entrant Reserve (NER) scheme, which offers a funding between EUR4.5bn to EUR9bn to support such projects across the European Union.
The scheme is funded by the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) whereby 300 million allowances are sold off to provide funding for renewables and CCS technology.
Of the 14 applications, nine were for CCS projects and five for innovative renewables.
Of the nine CCS projects, six are based in England – four in the Humber region and two in Teeside – and three in Scotland that include Ayrshire Power’s proposed multi-fuel power station at Hunterson in North Ayrshire.
Two of the nine carbon capture applications are for gas-fired power stations, including Scottish and Southern Energy’s Peterhead facility in Scotland and Powerfuel Power’s proposed facility at Hatfield Colliery near Doncaster in Yorkshire.
The five renewable energy schemes are made up of three tidal stream projects, one for wave technology and one offshore wind farm development.
The UK government will now consider the applications before deciding which to put forward to the EIB for further consideration.
