Fluxys said that considering the growing importance of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in Europe’s security of supply, this market consultation is an attractive opportunity for LNG companies to reserve capacity at a key strategic location providing access to end user markets in both continental Europe and the UK.
Following a market consultation held in 2003-04 the throughput capacity of the Zeebrugge LNG terminal is in the process of being doubled from 4.5 billion to nine billion normal cubic meters per year. Qatar Petroleum together with ExxonMobil, Distrigas and Suez LNG Trading have subscribed to long-term contracts for this capacity.
The various facilities at Zeebrugge together have an annual throughput capacity of 47.5 billion cubic meters of natural gas, enough to supply 10% of the EU25 market.
