During the maintenance outage, workers will perform more than 10,000 activities on a variety of plant components and systems. This includes replacing approximately a third of the reactor’s fuel assemblies.
The company has cautioned that while the unit is down, residents should be aware that one of the cooling towers will not produce any water vapor cloud, which is normal during a shutdown.
Dan Enright, vice president of Byron site at Exelon, said: “Our employees are committed to performing every work task correctly the first time, thus ensuring the safe and efficient performance of our units. Our goal now is to safely complete all the work needed to return the unit to service, preparing it for another 18 months of safe and reliable operation.”
Byron’s Unit 1 will continue to supply clean electricity to Exelon customers during the Unit 2 outage.
