The extension will allow development of a further 470MW, in addition to the existing 1,000MW capacity. This will effectively add over 140MW to the portfolio of electricity generation assets owned by Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE). SSE holds a 30.4% stake in Barking Power.
The consent includes requirements that carbon capture plant can be ‘retro-fitted’ to the extension should that be necessary in the future and that the necessary plant and pipeworks are installed to ensure that the station can supply heat in the future, if the opportunity arises.
The shareholders of Barking Power will decide in 2008 when and how to proceed with the extension.
