The CNY9.6bn ($1.5bn) Zangmu Hydropower Station’s first generating unit is positioned over 3,300m above sea level and the remaining five generating units are scheduled for completion no later than next year, according to Press Trust of India.
With a total installed capacity of 510MW, the project can generate 2.5 billion kilowatt hours of electricity annually to address power shortage in Tibet, reports state-run Xinhua News Agency.
The State Grid’s Tibet Electric Power official Liu Xiaoming said: "The hydropower station will solve Tibet’s power shortage, especially in the winter."
According to official statistics, Tibet’s per capita electricity consumption was slightly over 1,000 kilowatt hours in 2013, which is not even one third of the national average.
