Ann Pickard, Shell’s executive vice-president Africa, stated that the power station had been producing 300 megawatts (MW) from the beginning of 2009.
PHCN also usually produces 75 MW from Afam I to IV units resulting in a total loss of 375 MW.
Precious Okolobo, Shell’s spokesman, said “Afam VI power plant was shut down as an indirect result of the fire incident on Bomu manifold on Trans-Niger pipeline in Ogoni land. We could not sustain gas supply from Okoloma gas plant to Afam VI without an outlet for condensate evacuation. SPDC is working hard to repair the line and restore production as soon as possible.”
A fire broke out on April 12, 2009 on the Bomu manifold and the power plant was closed after the incident.
