In August, the company unveiled plans to demerge certain of its assets to create a new metals and mining company, to simplify operations and focus on key commodities.

Majority of the spun off assets will be located in Australia and South Africa. The new name will represent this footprint and its regional approach to manage operations.

South32 CEO elect Graham Kerr said: "The naming of South32 is a major step in the setup of our company.

"While South32 is grounded in the southern hemisphere, we will retain our global reach and ambition as we seek to exceed the expectations of a global shareholder base."

The company expects the demerger to be completed in the first half of the 2015 calendar year.

South32 will be based in Perth, Australia and a regional head office and global shared services center in Johannesburg, South Africa.

It may have a primary listing on the Australian Securities Exchange and secondary listing on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and a standard listing in London.
