Canada-based design and consulting company, Stantec has secured a $51m contract from Portland Water Bureau (PWB) to design the Bull Run Filtration Project in Portland, US.

Under the five-year design contract, Stantec will be responsible for the on-site design, geotechnical site investigation, and design quality management.

The firm will also provide assistance during construction, CM/GC support, and interactions, assistance during commissioning and operations support, and project management for the filtration design.

The facility contains technology to remove the microorganism Cryptosporidium from the drinking water and improve water quality, reliability, and system resiliency in Portland.

The facility is scheduled to commence operations in 2027

Slated to begin construction in 2022, the project is expected to have 145 million gallons per day (mgd) of capacity to treat water that is equivalent to meet the increasing population demands through 2045.

PWB Water Bureau Director Mike Stuhr said: “This new facility will help us continue to provide clean, safe water for the nearly one million people who use our resources, and make the Bull Run supply more reliable and resilient for future generations.”

The filtration facility, which is claimed to be first of its kind in Ploland, is scheduled to commence operations in 2027.

The project will include conventional treatment, oxidation, mechanical solids dewatering, and resilience features to provide high flexibility for future risks that are posed by climate change and seismic events.

Stantec said that the plant will remove sediment, organic material, and other potential contaminants and will help to provide high-quality drinking water for the residents in the city.

The Bull Run Watershed, which is located about 22 miles (35.4km) east of the city in the Mount Hood National Forest, is the primary source of water for Portland.

Recently, Stantec was selected by Tina Hydropower (THL) as Owner’s Engineer for the 15MW Tina River Hydropower Project in Solomon Islands.
