The Mihai Viteazu facility being built in the Constanza district will include 40 Gamesa turbines each with a capacity of 2MW and is expected to be commissioned by the year-end.
The facility is the first phase of the planned 1,500MW Dobrogea wind complex, which will include 50 farms to be built between 2011 and 2017.
According to the company, the Dobrogea wind complex will generate enough electricity to power around one million households in Romania and curb annual CO2 emissions by 1.25 million tonnes.
Iberdrola Renovables has already signed an off-take agreement with the Romanian network operator Transelectrica for connecting the Dobrogea wind complex to the national grid.
The company is pursuing all its initiatives in Romania with local company Eolica Dobrogea, which is owned by Swiss engineering group NEK Umwelttechnik and Romanian companies C-Tech and Rokura.
