PPL said that the two reactors at the Susquehanna plant were designed and built to operate at the increased power level.
The capacity increase will total about 205MW. PPL will own 185MW of the additional generation while the rest will belong to the plant’s co-owner, Allegheny Electric Cooperative.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) approved increases in generating capacity at the plant on two previous occasions; by 4.5% in 1994-95, and by 1.4% in 2001-02.
PPL stated that several non-nuclear systems like turbines and generators will be modified to increase the generating capacity. The increase will be implemented in phases between 2008 and 2010.
The Susquehanna plant, located in Luzerne County about seven miles north of Berwick, Pennsylvania, is owned jointly by PPL Susquehanna, which is the operator, and Allegheny Electric Cooperative.
