The nuclear power station located near the town of Annan in Dumfries and Galloway in south west Scotland, stopped producing power in 2004.
After receiving the formal permission from the Nuclear Installations Inspectorate (NII) in July 2008 to begin defuelling of the plant, the first flask was sent to Sellafield for reprocessing in April 2009.
As a part of the defueling process, over 38,000 fuel elements are being cleared from all the four reactors and safely despatched for reprocessing to Sellafield.
Till date 34,552 fuel elements have been removed from the plant and sent for reprocessing in 234 flasks.
Plant manager Richard Murray said, "This is a great achievement and another significant defuelling milestone for the site as we head closer towards safely removing all the fuel from Chapelcross."
It is expected that the defuelling project will be completed by mid 2013 and will result in the removal of 99% of the radioactivity from the site.
