As per the new application to the FERC, the company intends to add another natural gas delivery point from its Transco pipeline to New York City.
If approved, the Rockaway Delivery Lateral Project, which is estimated to cost $182m, will provide about 647,000 dekatherms per day of natural gas delivery capacity to National Grid’s gas distribution system – helping to meet growing energy demand.
Williams Partners’ Transco pipeline vice president and general manager Frank Ferazzi said the project involves constructing a new delivery point into National Grid’s distribution network to improve service reliability and flexibility.
"This project is critical to provide the additional natural gas supplies New York City needs, particularly as it strives to meet federal environmental standards and its own ambitious clean energy goals identified in its PlaNYC 2030," Ferazzi added.
The proposal involves constructing a 26in wide 5.1km long pipeline which includes about 4.6km long offshore pipeline and 0.4km onshore pipeline though routes that avoid residential, commercial, and environmentally sensitive areas.
The project is proposed to begin service during the second half of 2014.
The 16,415.3km long Transco pipeline system, with a capacity to transfer 9.7 million dekatherms of per day, transports natural gas to the markets across the northeastern and southeastern US.
