The scope of contract includes the manufacture, supply and installation of about 100km of subsea HVDC cable and accessories to interconnect two provinces through the Strait of Belle Isle.
The new subsea cable will deliver power from Muskrat Falls in Labrador to the island of Newfoundland. This cable form part of the new HVDC transmission link, rated at 900MW and having 1,100km of total length.
The transmission link is expected to bring power from Labrador to the island portion of the province to meet increasing electricity needs.
Nexans plans to manufacture the HVDC cables at its NVC factory in Tokyo, Japan. The firm will supply three lengths of mass impregnated submarine power cables rated at 350kV, along with other related accessories.
