Commenting on the production estimates Coal India chairman S Narsing Rao told Reuters that the company was close to reaching the estimated number, but the performance of the last two months in the fiscal could be the deciding factor.

"It is still a tight situation, but the next 66 days can tilt the scales," said Rao.

The company is required to produce an additional 9 million tonnes in the last quarter of 2012-13 fiscal, when compared to Q4 of 2011-12, to reach its target.

For the first three quarters of FY2012-13, the company produced 20 million tonnes in excess of the previous year’s figures.

The miner pegged the 2013-14 production target at 492 million tonnes, 7% higher than 2012-13 estimates.

Securing environmental and regulatory approvals are the two major roadblocks identified by the miner to increasing its production.
Coal India currently produces 80% of the coal mined in the country.
