The planning consent for the Energos project in Knowsley came as plans for a GBP48 million gasification plant were unveiled by another company for a site in Derby.
The project is expected to create 65 local construction jobs, along with 18 longer-
term green collar jobs, with Energos planning to set up a technician training programme with local colleges.
The Knowsley plant will use around 80,000 tonnes of municipal waste a year as its feedstock to produce the gas, called synthetic gas or syngas.
Energos already runs a similar gasification plant on the Isle of Wight, and facilities in Norway and Germany.
The company will start construction on facilities in Scotland and Lincolnshire later this year, with further developments planned in Derbyshire and Bristol.
Commenting on the Knowsley project, Energos managing director Nick Dawber said: We look forward to making a positive contribution to the Knowsley community and can now begin detailed discussions with neighbouring businesses to supply affordable, secure heat energy from a renewable source.
This will enable them to keep costs controlled, reduce their carbon footprint and maintain their competitive edge and job security, Mr Dawber added.
