Lundin Petroleum’s Norwegian subsidiary drilled appraisal wells 7220/11-4 and 7220/11-4 to vertical depths of 2255m and 2027m, respectively, below the sea surface by using the Leiv Eiriksson drilling facility.
Lundin Norway revealed that well 7220/11-4 had come across a 48 meters hydrocarbon column in Late Permian to Early Triassic conglomerates. The explorer said that 44 meters out of that was determined to be an oil column.
On the other hand, the other appraisal well 7220/11-4 A encountered a 54 meters hydrocarbon column in Late Permian to Early Triassic conglomerates and carbonate rocks in the Ørn formation. Lundin Norway stated that 44 meters of that was proved to be an oil column.
A statement from Lundin Norway read: “The objective of well 7220/11-4 was to delineate the eastern flank of the discovery by investigating the reservoir extent of conglomerates of the Late Permian to Early Triassic Age, Late Carboniferous to Early Permian carbonate rocks (Ørn formation), hydrocarbon columns and the quality of Carboniferous reservoir rocks (Falk formation).”
The appraisal wells are located two kilometers south of the Alta discovery well and 190km northwest of Hammerfest.
Lundin Norway said that the quality of reservoir through the oil column was different in both wells while a number of zones were shown to have high permeability. The hydrocarbon contacts though in the two appraisal wells were identical, stated Lundin Norway.
The Alta discovery was made in carbonate rocks in the Gipsdalen group nearly three years ago. Prior to the drilling of the 7220/11-4 and 7220/11-4 A wells, Lundin Norway had estimated the discovery to have 20-64 million Sm3 of recoverable oil equivalents.
