Under its contract, Prysmian Group will handle the design, manufacture, supply, termination and testing of the inter–array submarine cables system of Hornsea Project Two.

The cables, which are slated to be delivered in 2021, will connect 110 of the 165 wind turbines to be supplied by Siemens Gamesa and the offshore substation platform.

According to the Italian firm, the project will have over 300km of 66kV inter-array cables with EPR insulation and single wire armoring systems along with all related accessories.

“The development of grid infrastructures for the transmission and distribution of electric power from renewable sources is of strategic importance. With this contract, we are proving our capability to also offer competitive inter–array cable technology, as well as our undisputed leadership in export cables.”

Prysmian Group will manufacture all the submarine cable cores needed for the offshore wind farm project at its center of excellence facility in Wrexham. On the other hand, the armoring and assembling process will be carried out in Drammen, Norway.

Located 89km off the Yorkshire coast, the Hornsea Project Two will meet the power consumption needs of more than 1.3 million homes once it enters operations in 2022.

Last month, ABB was given contracts worth more than $150m to deliver a range of technologies to help integrate and transmit power from the Hornsea Project Two offshore windfarm.
