The news source noted that Shell is following the lead taken by the other private-sector players in the Indian retail fuel market, Reliance and Essar, to abandon plans to invest or expand operations as long as there is no level playing field in the retail fuel market.

Shell has not yet decided to shut down its petrol stations but has indicated to some of its employees to begin looking for news jobs, according to Petrol World.

Deepak Mukarji, Shell India’s head of corporate affairs, as quoted by Petrol World, said: Some employees undergoing training are being asked to look elsewhere, with due compensation being given to them according to their contract. But some have also been absorbed at existing sites.
