Through the joint venture (JV) company, Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL) and Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL) will work to complement their respective core strengths in the areas of nuclear power generation, at a time when India is looking at adding large power generating capacities from nuclear energy to meet its growing energy needs.
The JV will explore and evaluate various technology options available for steam turbine generator sets of 700MWe rating and above. The alliance also seeks to help in the development of BHEL as an indigenous source capable of designing and manufacturing steam turbine generator sets to meet the needs of various nuclear projects proposed to be set up in India.
BHEL is also executing several equipment supply and erection contracts for NPCIL, including the contract for the turbine generator and secondary side equipment for the first prototype 500MW fast breeder reactor, being set up by Bharatiya Nabhikiya Vidyut Nigam at Kalpakkam in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.
