The values of the contracts were not disclosed.
Echelon won the first contract through its partner Ubitronix System Solutions from Industrielle Werke Basel for a 20,000 follow-on unit smart meter project in Basel, Switzerland.
The project will help utilities remote read meters and collect power quality data, remote control electrical loads, integrate renewables, and control rate structures and provide accurate data and reduce errors and reduce metering cost.
The smart meter project will also provide consumers with an access to their power consumption and rate information.
Echelon has already started installing the meters and will continue the process through 2013.
The company secured its second contract through partnership with Kapsch from Austria-based utility WIEN ENERGIE Stromnetz.
The project involves deployment of a 1,400 unit of smart meters, as a part of Austria’s grid optimization and modernization plan to transform 95% of its 5 million households to smart meters by 2019.
The pilot project will cover Vienna, Lower Austria, and Burgenland and is expected to begin in May, based upon extensive laboratory, safety, and internal testing of Echelon’s smart meters.
The pilot will utilize Echelon’s power line technology to measure electricity in 15 minute intervals, using various security mechanisms, including 128 bit encryption, to ensure reliable and secure data communication and collection.
