Despite pulling out UK’s auction for sites in April this year, the company said that it is still interested in building a nuclear plant. Scottish and Southern Energy also has chalked out plans for a 60 MW pumped storage scheme alongside its 152 MW Sloy hydro electric power station in Scotland.
Together with Viking Energy that is 90% owned by Shetland Charitable Trust, Scottish and Southern Energy had also submitted an application for a 540 MW wind farm, which can generate about 2 TWh per year, two times the average of Scotland.
With the Scottish major planning to reduce its carbon emissions almost 50% by 2020, the wind farm is part of its project to build 4,000 MW renewable energy capacities in UK and Ireland by end-2013.
Scottish and Southern Energy is also exploring various potential sites whether they can be suitable for the construction of pumped storage schemes.
Ian Marchant, chief executive officer of Scottish and Southern Energy, said “Hydro electric schemes which use stored water to generate electricity have an important part to play…in complementing the growing, but variable, amount of output from wind farms. This means that developments like Sloy…will play a bigger part in meeting energy needs as the development of renewable energy gathers pace.”
