Ofgem said that the Low Carbon Networks Fund, which was established by the energy regulator as part of the 2010-2015 electricity distribution price control, will encourage UK’s electricity distribution network owners (DNOs) for development of projects.
The projects will enable energy networks and energy consumers to make the transition to a low carbon economy.
Ofgem senior partner for smarter grids and governance Stuart Cook said that Britain’s DNOs have responded very positively in the first year of the Low Carbon Networks Fund.
“He is pleased to see that the projects are highlighting a range of low carbon issues, and are proposing significant collaboration,” Cook said.
Earlier, each of UK’s seven electricity distribution companies (DNOs) has submitted at least one proposed project in the first stage of the annual competition in June that were screened by Ofgem for ensuring their eligibility for funding.
The regulatory body said that the DNOs can now develop these proposals for their entry into the final evaluation stage of the competition in September that will be scrutinized by an expert panel advising the Gas and Electricity Markets Authority, Ofgem’s governing body, for making the final decision on the projects that should be selected for funding.
Ofgem will announce the winners for the funding in December 2010.
