The company holds a 75% stake in the discovery while Canada based Sterling Resources holds the remaining interest.
The size of the find is estimated at 60-100 million barrels of oil in place, and Wintershall has now discovered five new oil fields in the North Sea in one year.
Wintershall board member Martin Bachmann said that these new discoveries increase the growth potential of the company’s portfolio in the North Sea considerably.
“The expansion of our activities in our core region North Sea, especially on the Norwegian continental shelf, is making good progress,” Bachmann said.
The company made a significant oil discovery at Maria well offshore Norway in July 2010, with estimated volumes of 250-520 million barrels.
