The new unit, which is being constructed at the Kladno I combined heat and power plant near Prague, will provide additional generating capacity of 135MW of electric power and 105MW of thermal energy.

Under the contract, ABB will design, engineer and install a complete electrical balance of plant solution.

The company will supply key products such as high, medium and low-voltage switchgear; power, auxiliary and distribution transformers as well as bus ducts, protection and low-voltage drives.

The new generating unit, which is scheduled for completion by the end of 2013, replaces a four-decade old coal-fired unit and its main fuel is a combination of lignite and biomass.

The electricity generated by the new unit will be fed into the local power grid, while heat will be fed into the district heating network serving the city of Kladno.

The Kladno I plant is owned by Alpiq Generation , a subsidiary of Swiss energy company Alpiq.
