The company will design, engineer, supply and install the offshore platform, offshore and onshore converter stations, and land and sea cable systems.
An offshore high-voltage direct current (HVDC) system with a rating of over 900MW will be deployed by ABB and the completed power link will be able to supply more than 1.5 million households with clean energy.
ABB said that its HVDC Light transmission technology will transport energy from the 400MW Gode Wind II and other wind farms in the North Sea to an offshore HVDC converter station.
This converter station will transmit the power to an onshore station at Dorpen on the German coast via 135km of underwater and underground cables, and a converter station here will feed electricity into the mainland grid, the company said.
The offshore network is expected to begin operation in 2015 and will avoid more than three million tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year.
