The unit will use the CATOFIN dehydrogenation process to produce 600,000 metric tonnes of propylene per annum and is expected to begin operation in 2014.

Lummus Technology president Dan McCarthy said the CATOFIN process is a cost effective option for increasing propylene supply as ethylene plants shift toward lighter feedstocks.

Propylene is a building block used to produce a variety of products including plastics and solvents.
