The company will use the UOP/Foster Wheeler solvent deasphalting (SDA) process technology to convert heavy crude to low-contaminant deasphalted oil which is further processed to produce liquefied petroleum gas, gasoline, jet fuel, diesel and propylene.
UOP, in collaboration with Foster Wheeler, will provide the technology license and basic engineering package for the new unit.
The new unit, which is expected to start up in 2015, will process 2.5 million metric tonnes per year of heavy crude.
To date, UOP and Foster Wheeler have designed and licensed over 70 SDA units, ranging in size from 7,000 to 48,000 barrels per day.
