The company installed 4.5 million smart meters in homes throughout its 35-county service area, while the deployment started in 2009.
FPL president Eric Silagy said that the meters were installed nine months ahead of schedule.
"Completing the installation of the 4.5 million smart meters and the deployment of smart grid technology throughout our service territory is making it possible for us to improve our service reliability, prevent outages and detect problems, while giving customers more control over the energy they use," Silagy added.
FPL is one of only six utilities in the US to receive a $200 million grant from the Department of Energy (DOE) to help fund one of the grid modernization project.
The company invested additional $600m for the installation of smart grid technologies.
DOE assistant secretary for the office of electricity delivery and energy reliability Patricia Hoffman said, "DOE funding of this FPL project and others is helping utilities and system operators across the nation get a faster, more accurate picture of the status of the grid, allowing them to respond more quickly and efficiently when disruptions occur."
