The council may extend the decommissioning time if related safety problems are cleared, reported The China Post.
AEC Minister Tsai Chuen-hornng made thye announcement in response to a proposal made by a former nuclear supervisory official Lin Zongyao.
Tsai noted that AEC might extend the service tenure of the existing three nuclear power plants, which have performed well over the past years, if there are no security issues involved.
Also, AEC will consider if there is no prospect of the Fourth Nuclear Power Plant coming online in the near future.
The three nuclear power plants are slated to be decommissioned by 2018 and 2025 at the latest.
