The company will need to return to the commission for getting final approval of its financing and engineering plans.
The 80-mile pipeline will supply natural gas to the Kennebec Valley region for industrial, commercial and residential use.
Construction work on the pipeline project is expected to begin in 2012 and continue through 2013.
Kennebec Valley Gas must also receive permits from state and local authorities for the construction of the pipeline.
