The company commenced the construction of 2,000MW Shuangjiangkou hydropower project in 2008 near the Dandu River.
However, green groups protested the commissioning of the project claiming that the project would have adverse environmental affects including declining water quality, fish decease and submergence of several nature reserves, reported China Daily.
Further, a Sichuan provincial government official stated: "Although I know hydropower development is important for the government’s energy strategy, it is still such a shame when mountains and rivers disappear."
The Ministry of Environment has, nevertheless, gave its nod for the project stating that it is in line with country’s energy development plan.
Meanwhile, the plant will hold 3,135 billion cubic meters of water and have a catchment area of 39,330km².
