Under the contract, the company will upgrade the 500kV switchyard at Sunbury Substation and replace the existing first generation GIS equipment deployed at the substation in 1980’s, with the new GIS.

The upgraded substation is expected to help the company improve its electric services.

ABB US Substations business senior vice president David Hewett said, "This will be the first modern 500kV GIS substation that PPL Electric Utilities is deploying on their system, and we very much appreciate the trust that they have placed in us."

Under the contract, the company will also provide all engineering, equipment and construction services for the project, including GIS switchgear, its associated foundation and enclosure.

In addition, the company will provide the GIS bus work that will be extend from the enclosure to the existing transformer and 500kV lines.

ABB will also support PPL Electric Utilities’ efforts to optimize the key interface work with the surrounding AIS structures in order to maximize station footprint, maintenance access and future upgrade costs.

The project is expected to be completed by 31 October 2014.
