Sources familiar with the matter said that the company plans to sell Dawson and Foxleigh in north-east Queensland.

Anglo American has reportedly approached Bank of America Merrill Lynch to assess it on the proposed sale.

The mining firm is planning to divest five mines in Queensland and New South Wales as part of its efforts to boost shareholder returns and strengthen its balance sheet, reported The Financial Times.

In December 2014, Anglo American has put its Dartbrook and the Callide coal mines on sale.

Anglo American metallurgical coal business CEO Seamus French said at the time: "We have reviewed all the assets.

"The process is essentially complete, but pretty much every asset we have is involved in some sort of joint venture so there is a pretty detailed, lengthy consultation process to go through which will kick off next year."

As part of its disposal program, the company is also seeking buyers for its platinum assets in South Africa and copper assets in Chile.
