As per the standards, the overall volumes and standards require 16.55 billion gallons of renewable fuels to be blended into the US fuel supply, representing a 9.74% blend.
The agency has specifically mandated 1.28 billion gallons of biomass-based diesel, a 1.13% blend, 2.75 billion gallons advanced biofuels, a 1.62% blend and 6 million gallons of cellulosic biofuels.
Meanwhile, EPA , has stated that it will propose flexible RFS statute to cut down both the advanced biofuel and total renewable volumes in the 2014 RFS volume requirement proposal.
The proposal is in line with growing concerns over ‘E10 blend wall’, projected to occur in 2014 creating challenges in meeting ethanol blend requirements at exceeding volumes in comparison to current E10 gasoline sale.
The federal authorities further extended the timeline to comply with the set standards for the year 2013 by four months to 30 June 2014.
EPA has affirmed that the current standards issued are in line with a January 2013 ruling introduced by the US Court of Appeals, directing the agency to re-evaluate projections for cellulosic biofuel in view of market conditions.
